Weaving is one of the oldest art crafts, the uniqueness about weaving flax is that you do not use a loom, you solely use your hands and fingers to craft beautiful items.

Traditional Maori weaving has its tikanga (protocols) that are observed throughout the weaving stages, from planting through to harvesting and even the preparation of the fibre. The tikanga is continued through the artistic design of each work and to the completion of the weaving.

The weaver on this website is Te Muri Whaanga, her Iwi (tribe) is Rongomaiwahine Ngati Kahungunu from Omahu te marae at Hastings. Tuahuru te marae Mahia Peninsula, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.

Te Muri Whaanga has been weaving for over 10 years and has a Diploma in Maori design art studying at Te Wanaga O Raukawa and she is in her final year of a degree in Maori design arts.

The designer, writer, camera operator, and project manager of this website is TeArohanoa (Doreen) Taiapa her Iwi (tribe) is Rongomaiwahine Ngati Kahungunu Omahu te marae at Hastings and Tuahuru te marae at Mahia Peninsula, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand.
